Central heating bangs when pump kicks-in!

Does anyone know what to do about this? It sounds as if it's upstairs but after lifting the flooboards the pipes are well and truly fixed, right through each of the joists in the floor so therefore they can't move at all. This has only happened since a slight modification to our ancient boiler. We've eeked all the air out of the upstairs radiators which in general has quietened the whole system down but as soon as the pump goes there's still this almighty great bang!! Has anyone else had this?

Is the pump itself securely fixed?. Have somone keep an eye on it when you switch it on.
Sounds do not allways come from where you think, especially with a water filled system.
I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.
  • Not sure if it would work for you, we had a similar problem which after a few friends and plumbers looking into it was solved by a really old plumber (like about 80).

He suggested that somewhere in the system we'd probably have a bubble that got moved from time to time. He suggested we turned the heating on full and turn all the radiators OFF. Except the one at the top of the house/system.

We got an almighty rummble and bang for about ten minutes. Then took the air out of the top ratdiator and turn the rads back on, not forgetting to turn the heating back to normal.

We have lovely hot radiators all over the house and no clattering any more.

    Good luck

Thanks for this - I will check to see if the pump's moving and then try the bubble theory!! I think the only hesitation will be that the radiators are so old that they don't have on/off switches but I may be able to move the temp controls with wd40 or something!!
