Most 16x DVD writers are around £30, at most computer part suppliers. Personaly NEC, Pioneer, and LG are better quality drives and record to RAM discs too. All modern drives are dual-layer.

The drive badged as Philips is in fact a Benq made one. Which is a good make, along with Sony.

Sony don't make their own drives anymore. Some are Liteon's, some NEC's and some Benq's

Yes they are mostly that price, but unless you live near one you might have to pay up to a tenner in delivery.

Can you tell me what colour the face plate is? Beige, Silver? Can't tell with my eyes or my PC screen should I say.

I have a old computer with a dvd player, would I need any more equipment to install this.

Optical drives have jumper switches on the back to either set them as master and slave. If you're adding a second DVD drive, then you'll need to make sure that only one device on the IDE channel is set to master.

At the moment, I'd imagine that you have a hard drive on one IDE channel and your DVD drive on the other.

Also, you'll need to make sure your power supply is up to supporting an extra drive. I don't know what you're currently powering using your PC, but older machines are likely to have quite a low power supply.

would I be able to put a dvd/cd in my computer dvd drive and copy from straight from this?

Commerical DVDs that you buy have copy protection on them, so it wouldn't be possible to just copy direct. There are ways to get around this, but I somehow don't think that this forum is the place to explain how.

If it's a home made DVD from your camcorder or DVD recorder then is will be possible to copy direct, although your computer will need to be able to read fast enough to keep up with the writing.

    Hope that's of some help.

Is it so cheap because Philips have just gone bankrupt?

I'm not sure if LG Philips Displays (who make TV's and monitor picture tubes) have much to do with DVDRW internal drives.
