Philips Dual Layer DVDRW Drive £31.02

The Philips DVDR1628K dual layer internal DVDRW is available at PC World for £31.02. Unlike a lot of OEM drives you get fron online specialist PC sellers it is the full retail boxed option.

The instore price is £49.99, but if you do a collect in store you can get it for the web price.

Amazon also have it at £31.02 but with the added hassle of delivery. Most other online places have it at about £38 + del.

The 1628 is a good drive - excellent write quality and it is a reliable disc quality scanner. It also has Smartburn so it can create new / improved write strategies without a firmware upgrade. Coincidentally I bought one yesterday using Collect@Store.

It's identical to the Benq 1640 and you can cross flash it to the Benq firmware using BQFlasher. With the Benq firmware you can use the Benq tools.

Lots of info at the CDFreaks Philips/Benq Forum

Will a dual layer dvd play in a normal dvd player - assuming they've been finalised correctly.

Yes it's a good buy. Also consider the NEC's.

Will dual layer discs play in DVD player? Depends on the player (age, make) and the quality of the disc. Unfortunately Dual Layer Discs are quite expensive.

The equivalent and cheapest Pioneer works out £2 more from Ebuyer and has pretty much the same standard of reviews.
  • Hi
Bought Phillips once, and I personally would never buy them again, worst dvd writer I've ever had, more coasters than a tea shop.
From now on I only buy NEC, never had a problem with any that I've bought, and no coasters.
    Usually excellent machines and reviews.

    Hope this helps

Flashing is where you upgrade/change the internal "software" of the drive, to make it recognise more discs or improve write quality. What blinky is refering to is "flashing" using the software of a internally identical device to add functionality.

Personally, I would get the Pioneer 110D from Amazon Marketplace seller Pixmania (established with their own store on the internet (pixmania.co.uk) for £28.50 + Delivery = £33.00. You can use your credit for this purchase too.
It is a excellent drive, I have one and it hasn't let me down yet!
