Time to change cat food?

Our two moggy boys are about 10 months old. We've noticed their appetite seems to have reduced (at one point they were going through 5-6 pouches of kitten food a day between them, plus dry)
Currently they get a pouch between them in the morning (which they tend to pick at, and finish off in the evenings) then another pouch when we get home from work. (Plus dry as they choose)

The morning routine used to be... rush into bedroom, bounce around, chase me down the stairs all the way to the kitchen, pester me until food is down! For the last few weeks they've been happier dozing on the end of the bed while I get dressed, and I have to physically haul them out of the bedroom... and they probably won't even sniff at the food I put down before I leave the house.

I get the impression they're enjoying the dry food more than the pouches now - we started them on Hills recently, and they've just polished off a 3kg bag (I think) between them, so need to buy more. Could this be satisfying them more than the old stuff so they're not so hungry in the mornings?

O/H thinks they're fully-grown, I'm not convinced! Can they be switched to adult food and still continue to grow properly? Our ginger boy has always been bigger than his brother - I'd say he's approaching twice as heavy, (in a 'guess the weight of the cake' kind of way) so we tend to fret about the smaller boy (although vet is unconcerned)

Could they need something more grown up or should I leave them on the kitten stuff for now?
My TV is broken!

  • Try mixing kitten and adult food together to start with. They should be on adult food at 12 months. However from the age of 10 months to 12 months it's safe to move onto adult food. By mixing the foods together you'll ease them in

hills is definitely more filling and also better nutirtionally.

please note though that it is very easy to over feed a cat on Hills. If you weight out their daily allowance using scales, it hardly looks like enough to fill them...but it is! My cats get 60gms each per day - 30gms in the morning and 30gms at night, it looks like starvation rations in the bowl, but it isn't :)

My 3 have mainly dry food, but share a packet between them in the morning and another in the evening, it's more of a treat and so DH and I can check no bits have fallen off and they all still have 2 ears, 1 tail and a leg at each corner:rotfl:
  • Cats are not fully grown until about 2 years of age.....and whether or not you keep giving them kitten food is up to you.

I dont give mine kitten food after they are about 3 or 4 months of age.

I dont agree with feeding a cat on just dry food so always give them some meat as well and have never weighed food in all the years I have had a cat.

Cheap and cheerful is good for me and is good for them. No named brands, which half the money is advertising and brand recognition, and plenty of fresh meat when you can.

    Hope that helps a bit.

Love it! :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

Since mine have been on a premium dry they have been less demanding for wet food (unless its fresh chicken!)
My first reply was witty and intellectual but I lost it so you got this one instead :D

if Hills is fed in the correct daily amounts it can work out as cheap as 35p a day to feed your cat (depending on where you purchase the food from, most of the online stores have deals on at any given time). my two also get chicken treats about twice a week too.
