Is it cheaper to....

OH (and sometimes me) has chicken on his sandwiches for his lunch...

Is it cheaper to buy a pack of chicken breasts, steam them and slice them up for sandwiches, or buy MrT Value sandwich chicken type stuff??

Not sure about it being cheaper but probably taste better! If you read the ingredients lists on the chicken cold meat packet, doesn't sound very appetising.

Thanks for the tip about steaming chicken breasts, great idea!

    Hi IsoChick,

What I do is buy and roast a whole chicken as I think that's the most economical way. I usually do this when the oven is on for something else to save on energy. Then I strip the chicken and divide the meat into portions that will make sandwiches for my hungry mob for one day. Freeze in the portions and lift out of the freezer the night before I need it.

I'd do niether and roast a whole chicken option and use that! Defiantely preferable to value type processed meats

I agree with the others who say buy and use a whole chicken!!! Cooked chicken freezes well, you can freeze it in small quantities too.

I never buy sandwich meat - it's full of added water and chemicals, and 'real' meat works out as cheap if you buy the right cut and aren't wasteful, as well as tasting a world better.. We have the real thing instead. I freeze slices of leftover pork, beef and chicken, and buy and cook a ham before slicing that up and freezing it too.

What with the real meat, HM bread and often HM pickles, mayo or dressing as well, my other half's work colleagues are under the mistaken impression that we're loaded :rotfl: as none of them can work out howcome he has a 'gourmet' sarnie every day.

Thanks guys, we hardly ever actually buy a whole chicken - the last roast chicken we had was one of our own from our garden; and that was weeks ago (if not before Christmas)

Will have to work out what it would cost in terms of having enough for sandwiches for 2 adults for a whole week, plus a roast dinner....

    :)

Must admit, there have been a few days at work last month where people have said that we must be really well off (:rotfl: ) as I've been bringing in leftovers for dinner, and have eaten butternut squash lasagne, mexican spicy beef and cornbread etc. and they all think it's posh and expensive, whereas it's all homemade!!
  • Funny that people presume because you have a nice lunch you must be well off! My sweet-toothed OH gets this from his work mates when they see his HM brownies/cookies/muffins in his lunch box. As they cost £1.50 or more in Starbucks they think he must be spending a fortune on them. It seems lots of people have still yet to figure out that you can eat very well on a reasonable budget if you can cook. Of course all you OS's already know this.
