We have stayed in the hostel at Elterwater, Lake District.
We have also stayed in the Langdale Country Club at Elterwater at £80 a night.
Two very different perspectives of the same little gorgeous little hideaway and both excellent experiences.
We were able to book a room just for hubby and myself, bunk beds so not much romance that night but a great time all the same.
The hostel was inhabited by lots of members of the Conservative party at the time we were there as they were holding some sort of annual conference nearby.
Ages ranged from about 8 to about 80 for guests at the time.
I would highly recommend this particular hostel although we wouldnt have gone if we had been sharing a room with strangers.
If I remember the cost was about £14.0 -
Forgot to mention I have stayed at Windermere which was super location-fabulous view and spacious 6 bedded rooms and Ambleside which I did not like one bit - although it was directly on the lake side. The YHA organise a shuttle bus throughout the summer that meets all the trains arriving at Windermere and drops you off at whatever YHA you have booked into.SallyD0

I remember staying in youth hostels in the 70's and 80's when you had do do a chore before leaving in the morning. Is this still the case?0

Hi travelling
I've stayed in quite a few hostels in the past 10 years and never come across that.
To the OP go for it. I've had good experiences overall and met some interesting people.
Have you considered couch surfing? perhaps not the most private way of travelling but good if you are up for meeting people and getting a spot of local knowledge.Whatever you can do or dream you can, begin it. Boldness has genius, power and magic in it!'0 -
