Hi everyone. Can I close bank account and still reclaim charges for it because it is account plus in HSBC and I'm paying £12.95 a month as well as charge of £25 for even £3 overdrawn, we don't use any benefits of the account. Is it OK? It seems like banks decided to charge £25 on every penny ovedrawn and doing it all the time since the last mnth of 2008, they never did it before.

Yes, you can still claim on a closed account.

In the “good, old days” most banks (maybe all), even without official overdraft facilities, would provide a small, free buffer of maybe £10.00 or so. With all that claiming going-on, virtually all banks have stopped doing that. Now they slap on charges when going just 1 pence overdrawn (while it used to be £10.01).

Just do not go so close to the edge, provide your own buffer.

i had an hsbc account for about 20 years, i havn't used it for the last 5 years or so, how do i go about claiming??

If i' m correct you can reclaim charges for the last six years, but check in Martins reclaiming bank charges article, he has template letters and step by step guide on this matter. Good luck on reclaiming from HSBC they are quite tough, I didn't get back anything of mine yet.
