OU pc grant....

Can you buy a computer from ebay with the pc grant or does it have to be from an actual shop. I know you have to send a receipt into the OU so not sure how it would work. thanks x

  • The literature for the PC Grant says "a reputable supplier" which I don't think EBay falls in to, seeing as you have little or no right to reply, tech support or customer services should anything go wrong with the computer. I would also be wary of buying anything in that price bracket from EBay, especially something as complex as a PC, and factoring in the "one-time only" nature of the PC Grant, I would say go with another supplier.
As a side note, does that mean you have received your PC Grant already?
  • Not a researched answer, but I'd imagine that buying secondhand from an individual wouldn't be allowed, as there's too much chance of fraud. Imagine the situation; I get my mate to setup a buy it now ebay auction, I buy the 'computer' off him with using the OU grant, and then he gives me most of the cash back with a little something for his trouble. Everyone's a winner!
  • Hi, can anyone tell me at what stage you apply for the PC grant? My course starts in May and i've had it confirmed that my course fees will be paid in full. I've just returned my registration agreement, as yet i've not seen any forms or anything to apply for the grant, will i be sent them at a later date or do i need to find them and apply else where?
    Thanks

I have just recieved my pc grant for my OU course that started in Jan, but I applied late for it hence why its just arrived now.

My question is: is it repayable?

as the wording on my letter that explains about the grant and it seems to say that it is but then when re-reading it doesnt seem to have to be....

    so Im now confused!!

Luckily I have a few people that work in Computers so they will be showing me what pc/laptop to purchase.

    hi
you dont need to pay it back, but the pc has to be from a 'propper' shop or website... you can buy from dell outlet too (i rang up and asked them)

I got this grant last year.
My nephew has an internet business, i know nothing about computers so i asked him to find a good deal and buy it.
The only 'receipt' that i had was a note from him confirming what had gone on, and the OU accepted that.

Does anyone know what point you can apply for this grant.
I'm hoping to start a course in May, have had full funding approved and returned the signed aggrement. Should i have apply by now? Or will i still recieve something to tell me how to apply?

I've dug out my letter from last year. The grant i got was £250 towards a computer plus £140 towards the Internet.
It says the number of grants is limited, on a first come first served and the cheques would go out in Feb 08, can't remember when i got it.
I've just been looking on my website and there's nothing there, but maybe that's because i'm not entitled to a second grant this year.
    Says ---am i eligible ?
    Must be England resident
    In receipt of course grant
    Doing 30pts or more
Aiming to do degree within 6yrs
    Not had grant before
Not in arrears to the OU
Not already getting a disabled grant.
