Beaten by a washbasin!

Just curious if anyone else has had problems fitting monobloc taps to washbasins. I struggled all yesterday afternoon to fit the thing, but when fitted and tightened up, not easy in itself, it took only fairly light pressure to loosen the whole thing. Eventually I measured the hole, and the tap. The rubber sealing ring dia. is 38mm, exactly the same as the hole in the sink, so it would never fit properly. Basin has now gone back, to B&Q, and in future I'll stick to separate taps, so much easier to install and maintain. Tap only has one fixing screw, and I've since noticed that some have two. Might be better. Seems such a primitive arrangement. One tap in B&Q actually had a kind of step which fitted into the basin hole, to locate it. So simple, why not all of them. Also, locating washers available for single taps, why not monobloc type?
Anyone else had problems, or am I just lucky? I tried every possible combination of washers, sealing rings, or even none, but nothing worked. Nightmare.

  • Hi

Welcome to the world of plumbing.
As an installer you just have to get over the problems if you are provided with rubbish ,time is money. That's why both me and OH harp on about buying known brands, and hopefully better quality.Just my opinion......

Hope it gave you a chuckle, canuckle. FYI, it was a B&Q "washbasin to go, " and a tap from an internet shop. Well, buy cheap, buy twice, as they say. Tap wasn't cheap, mind you.
