Total loss - do insurers have to send the cheque within a set time?

I called them to see why they were taking so long and they said they know I've been waiting ages but they haven't received copies of my documents from another department in high enough quality. This is getting serious, I have had to replace my scooter and it has ended up costing about £500 more than the payout will be (after the excess and another insurance policy). I'm going to have to ask my mum or dad for help with paying my bills.0

Ring then up, ask for a superviser, make a note of their name and use their name during the conversation. Be very polite but explain the situation and the hardship it is causing you.
Mention politely that the time it has taken is against the payment guidelines set out by the Financial Services Authority.
Ask them politely to get the matter sorted out as quickly as possible and ask them to give you a reasonable date for the cheque to be in your hand eg seven days time. Agree a time scale with them and then at the end of the conversation summarise what they have agreed and thank them for being helpful.
That should get things moving.0
