Our local Asda has started this at the checkouts, causing absolute chaos, although not all checkout operators seem to have signed up for it! Probably fed up with the aggro. It has all the hallmarks of a junior manager, or eager graduate, producing a "report," and convincing senior management, since neither of them will have any inkling of real world scenarios. Some smug p--t thinks he has justified his salary for a few months, wait for the next bright idea.

I used to live in Germany up until last year and all the shops over there don't have bags. Every one buys those colapsable boxes and uses them instead. Alot of the shops have them on sale by the till. at first it took a bit of getting used to, but we did and if we forgot them and had left them in the car we fill the trolley and take it to the car and fill the bags there, only thing is Sainsburys do not give you green points for that. I remember when we all had to start wearing seatbelts and when we could no longer smoke at our desks at work it wall a pain in the bum but we got used to it and all the hassle is but a distant memory forgotten.

It sounds good in principle but, if you think about it, you would end up with your shopping in carrier bags that have had other customers shopping in. What if the carrier bags aren't clean? What if your shopping is in 8 full carrier bags but you only had 5 to 'swap'?

I think it will be ok once I get used to it as well as the customer. I still think biodegradable is the way to go.

We obviously don't work at the same ASDA because none of the checkouts at mine have any carrier bags, just re-useable ones. No choice - enforced.

I didn't even have a bag for a blouse I bought... I put it in with my bread!

I don’t see why they can’t return to having empty boxes (wine, banana etc) near the tills, as some supermarkets do. This in itself would reduce the number of carrier bags used and also help with recycling cardboard – oh, but (call me cynical;) ) then they wouldn’t have the additional income from the sale of recyclable carrier bags!

When I went to work yesterday all the shopping was in bags! :T
We are going to have a pallet of carrier bags a month so I wonder how long that will last with 10 vans going out 3 times a day, 7 days a week with 8 orders on each van! Not long I guess.

We always have our shopping delivered by Asda.
I always find it funny to receive so many carrier bags with 1 item in it. A tin, A bunch of bananas, A turnip. Ive seen it all. Do Asda accept carrier bags back? We have a cupboard full of about 300, seriously lol.
When my Husband went to Asda a few weeks ago for our shopping they had a new thing where they wouldnt place all the carrier bags on the checkout and you have to keep asking for more and the woman kept passing 1 or 2 for a full trolley of shopping. Yet they dont seem to mind so much when they are delivering with so many bags!

I had to leave my shopping at the till the other day

i had taken some carrier bags with me, but not enough to put my over £100 shop in, i asked the cashier for some more, but she said that they couldn't give them out,

i asked again, and a manager came over, again was told 'sorry no carrier bags'

so i just unpacked my shopping from my carrier bags and walked away.

It really is pathetic, it is just another way for supermarkets to make more money out of us.

It's about time, manufactures used less packaging for there products.
