Microsoft e-mail help

Hope you can help me. An elderly relative has just got a computer and is trying to e-mail me but he says his e-mail address ends with @microsoft.com but I don't think that is correct. Can anyone tell me if it is possible to have an address like that as most of the ones I have seen end with @hotmail or the name of the broadband supplier. I am no expert with computers,obviously, but want to help him if I can .He lives too far away to visit so he is phoning me for help. Once the e-mail issue is sorted we will be fine. Any advice welcome.

Unless he works for Microsoft, he won't have a Microsoft email address. Sounds like he's trying to set up through an email client like Outlook or Windows Live Mail which gives "John.Smith@Microsoft.com" as the example email.

Why don't you get him to sign up with https://www.gmail.com for an account that he can access through the web, doesn't need any setting up bar filling in some details about himself and then he can get access it anywhere.

I think its unlikely that he would have a @microsoft.com email address - These address are used by micoroft employee's.

Do you know how he is accessing email? Is it through the Intenet or Outlook etc?

I still have no idea whether he is using Outlook as he doesn't know what I'm talking about ,but I have signed him up to a Hotmail account so hopefully we will be on the same wavelength and we can progress from here.
