Catch 22

I keep recieving this message when I boot my Mrs netbook, its the Advent version of the MSI Wind.
Windows has encountered a problem communicating with a device connected to
your computer.

The error can be caused by unplugging a removable storage device such as an external
USB drive while the device is is use, or by faulty hardware such as a hard drive or
CD-ROM drive thaqt is failing. Make sure any removable storage is properly connected
and then restart your computer.

If you continue to recieve this error message, contact the hardware manufacturer.

File: \Boot\BCD

Status: 0x00000e9

Info: An unexpected I/O error has occured.

I would normally just put the XP install disc in and fix it but I have two problems, one I dont have a CD drive to do it, and two the recovery partition is unaccess able due to it being on the same hard driv e that wont boot up.

Any ideas?

P.S. I know its not a hardware fault since I canm boot into ubuntu from a usb stick and use the hard drive visit.

  • So does this show up on black screen and you cant get into windows ? if so the only way to fix this problem would to be restore the laptop. I guess you never made any recovery media when you purchased the laptop? so you would need to contact the tech guys 0870 901 3000 and get them to send you recovery media. What model number is the advent ? When did you purchase the advent ?

Have you tried booting XP from a USB pendrive, as described here:

    http://articles.techrepublic.com.com/5100-22_11-5928902.html

I should add that it's another of those things that I've wanted to try, but have never actually got around to doing...

He could try this but he would need a copy of xp, what I doubt he has.

I've got a copy of XP for a different computer so could use that, all I need to do is repair the installation, I'll give it a go.

I actually took it back to PC World where I bought it end of last year and they tried to tell me it needed a new HD, we argued a bit I showed them the HD from ubuntu, they told me they could fix it but I'd need the CDs and an external CD drive and they'd charge me £70 for the effort. I told them I'd be back later.

Might try tech guys but aint paying for premium rate call I love saynoto0870, heres the free phone 0870 901 3000
  • Might be worth picking up an external drive off Ebay or somewhere, because if you have any other problems down the line that need the drive you'll be right back to square one.

Thats true it would come in handy. I quite fancy the challenge of xp on a usb stick so will probably do both.
