Driving ban incurred abroad..........

Hi all,
My rather foolish OH was given a driving ban in Italy for 6 months and a fine for drink driving. However, this did not impede on his ability to drive in the UK but should he want to drive again in Italy he would have to undergo a medical etc.
Anyway, that was several years ago. There is nothing on his driving licence however to say he was banned from driving. The issue now is regarding insurance.
Once he got back to UK....approx 3 years ago he notified his insurance that he had been banned in Italy but not in UK and hnce his insurance sky rocketed.
Of course now he has declared it once he has to every time. Should he have not declared it as it happened in Italy and no record on his licence??
Anyway that is irrelevent now as he has declared it. However, as there is no record on his licence only on insurance forms does he need to still declare it next time he renews his insurance?
Would he be best contacting DVLA for hteir advice or does anyone have any advice to offer as his insurance quotes are totally ridiculous.
Thanks all.
