I have online banking with barclays, one thing I can't understand whenever I check online it says:
Current Balance £1,962.82
Last Night's Balance £1,967.29
My current balance is always less then Last Night Balance, even I havn't spent anything. There ia always difference of £1-£5, Can some one explain why

hi there its generally because you may have a standing order or have used your card for a payment which is due to come out of your account........0

I use barclays online bank and tend to ignore the "last night balance". It usually refers to transactions that have occured on your account on that day, after they have calculated the closing balance for that day.
For example (i think it works this way):
day one. balance is £1000 there are no outstanding transactions to be processed. At 6pm, you buy something on the net (for say £100) and the company charge your card straight away. It may take a few days for the charge to show on the online statement.
day two. the £100 might still not show on you online statement but the summary will prob say somehting like:
Current balance £900
Last night balance £1000
Does that sound about right?0 -
Explained very well sujman
The Halifax do the same as you explained eg:
Balance is your balance but things might be going eg: card transactions but aren't taken into account in this figure and available balance is your balance with the transactions going through which anything going through are taken into account.
I take more note of the available balance as that's what I'll end up with when any transactions pending are taken from the balance.
I find it good as if you take the available balance from the balance that's the value of transactions going through due to be taken.Proudly Banking & Saving With:

From what the OP said, it doesn't sound as if it's a regular transaction as it's only ever between £1-5. Does it reset itself the next day, or do you have a steadily decreasing balance?

It may be a charge that was cancelled. e.g a tab at a pub for instance?
When I cancelled an on-line order once (not refunded the charge but cancelled so they needed to reverse the charge), the diff in balances on my summary stayed for a while.
When I queried with Barclays telephone banking, the said it can take upto 14 days for the system to clear itself. If you are still unsure, call them and they might be able to pinpoint the actual charge in question.0 -
It's to make you think you have more money than you have, so you spend more, then they can charge you if you go overdrawn.0

It sounds like someone is trying to get a transaction through but, it's failing.
This has happened to me a few times when I've signed up for things to pay for later, they check your account is able to take money from but it then allows the transaction to lapse.
Like a security check!
If it's happening way too often call the bank and alert them!
Hope this helpsProudly Banking & Saving With:
