I always use just an ordinary bit., gives a cleaner hole,
in fact I might even reach for a wood bit0 -
Ordinary but you should try and locate the studs in the wall to fix the fire/heater to. Failing that make sure you use proper plasterboard fixings.0

You only need a masonary drill bit if there is masonary(brick, cement, stone) behind the plasterboard that you are having to drill through too... otherwise an ordinary bit is fine for plasterboard... well thats what we have always used . Maybe a builder will come along with a different take on things :rotfl:#6 of the SKI-ers Club :j

Any bit will work to drill through plaster board because it is very soft, but if you use a masonary one, it won't go blunt where as with a metal bit it will take the cutting edge of quite quickly.
If you are planning on fixing straight to the plaster board and not to a stud or something more solid behind, then you need to make sure the fire isn't too heavy. You could also use a fixing like this as you just wind it in with a screwdriver so no drilling needed.

Markie1980 is spot on with his advice, these fixings are available in any decent diy shop, and they work well, and no drilling either, but hang my plasma from one..........Political?....I dont do Political....well,not much!0

You do not actually need a drill at all. Only this morning I fixed up a new Ikea ceiling fitting for my son. All that was necessary was to push a screwdriver through. Obviously it needs to be the right size for the wall plug that you are using. If you are going to fix a heavy object to the wall then, as has been said, you need a masonry drill to fix to the wall behind the plasterboard. If the fitting has to be in the plaster board then, as has been stated, you would need heavy duty plaster board fixings.I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.0
