Cheap glasses and free eye test at ASDA Opticians

Visited my local ASDA Opticians in Tamworth for a checkup earlier this week and was told I needed new glasses. I got two pairs of designer glasses for £95 and as I bought the glasses there and then, the sight test was free.

I also had the option to buy a complete pair of glasses for £19 although these weren't from the designer range but they did seem quite decent.

ASDA don't do a there and then or within the hour service but it I got the glasses within 3 days.

i always worry about buying glasses from supermarkets after my bad experience in tesco. I think supermarkets should stick to selling kitchen cupboard items like milk, baked beans to bread and not try and take over the world by selling anything and everything and eventually forcing other shops to close.

Did this price include the lenses, because they seem to have a price up on the wall with all the frames, but there is a card on all the consultation desks with the different types of lenses available and the various prices. I have assumed the lenses are extra. I am not slating Asda opticians at all, I have my contact lenses from them and am currently waiting for a new set on order from them, and have no complaints to make about there prices.

The prices did include the lenses - mine were hard coated which apparently makes then more scratch resistant.

I had the same concerns about buying from a supermarket but the girl I spoke to said that they use the same suppliers as Boots opticians.

I used to go to Specsavers but ASDA are so much cheaper and when I got there the optician from the local Specsavers was working there!

hi went to asda opticians in tamworth same store as you, and got pair of spex for £19 pound as you said and got the sight test free!!!! the sight test should have been £15, so i just cant believe i got everything for £19 pound test, lenses, frame and hard coat. i just cant get over it, thank you so much!! :T

Do they have a large range of glasses to choose from? It sounds like a really good deal, its just my nearest Asda is over an hour away - its the only supermarket i'd love to have round here, they always seem to have great offers! Its just I don't want to make the trip and then find out theres only a few to choose from.

I'm in need of an eye test, but unfortunately both our nearest Asda's don't have their own optitions. I suppose I could use the Specsavers that is in the Lower Early branch (free voucher woob woob!!)

Took my kids to have there annual check up at Asda in October at this store and would never use them again. My daughter was bullied in to what specs she could have, the optician gave her no choose even choosing the frames for her. As a 14yo she wanted designer frames which she would have purchased for herself but the optician said not to be silly and she ended up with a pair of Umbro boys specs. Unfortunately i was in with another optician at the time with my youngest son so had no say till the paperwork was already written up and was told it was too late to cancel them as it would have already have gone on the system and i would have been charged a cancellation fee. In future i will be sticking to vision express.

im sorry but that doesn't sound right to me. I have used this store's opticians since it opened and not once has an optician picked glasses for me - they always hand you over to one of the dispensers. They also only ever have one optician working at a time - I know because I have asked this question before and was told that the second room is used as a store and not a test room.

You would also have had to sign the paper work as your child cannot legally sign for the glasses.

You dont happen to work for the local Specsavers by any chance?

If I am wrong I apologise in advance but this does not sit right with me.

No i dont work for spec savers, i am a carer for my disabled partner and mum to three.

When i went, there were 2 opticians available to see and a queue of four other people to be seen, all waiting to go into one room. This is why i werent with my daughter when her glasses were chosen. The order had been put through on the instore computer system to speed up the processing time and i did only have to sign paperwork when i came out 15mins later with my son. I explained at the time my daughter was not happy with the frames chosen for her and wished to chose a pair with her that she would be happy wearing, the optician said as the order had been put on the system it could not be cancelled unless i paid a fee. I also raised concerns as i did not necessarily want the children choosing frames from there because they did not at the time offer the flexi frames that i have for my youngest from vision express but was told i could not use the voucher anywhere else. This was contradicted a week later when my partner was told he could go anywhere he wanted as they do not offer a reglaze in old frames - you can only buy new frames and lenses as sets at Asda.

When my partner took his frames to vision express and explained the service we had received we were told we were not the only ones to have received poor treatment.

This all seems like a bit of a rum do . I really think I would have absolutely insisted on the order being re-done (who cares if it had already gone through on the computer?). A 14 year old cannot be party to a legally-binding contract so there's no way you should have let them do this. I think you should name and shame the particular store....
