No, there is no need to get a passport if you're British. If you're travelling by boat, or by train or road from N.Ireland into southern Ireland then a passport or id isn't necessary at all, nobody will ask for it.

If you are travelling into Ireland, including into N.Ireland, by air from Britain most of the carriers seem to want photo id. As a Brit there is no such thing (yet) as national identity cards, so the airlines usually expect to see a passport. This is a security measure and nothing to do with immigration.

Uh..., how would one be able to prove that they are British if they don't have a passport to show?

Not all Brits have driving licenses, and not all those with a UK license are British.

I understand the budget airlines requirement for photo ID is just that so a UK photo driving license appears on the list of accepted proof of ID. Having said that I had to take my passport to Southampton because I still have my paper licence.

I regularly travel from the Gatwick to Cork with easyjet and have NEVER been asked for a passport. My UK Drivers Leicence is quite adequate.
