I just got 4 credit card cheques on a sheet of paper through the post.

That must be cheaper than a real cheque book to issue.

If my current account cheques came that way I could manage for a year on them.

It is possible to arrange internet access so that different people (or at least different logins - if they decide to share passwords you can't really do much about it) are needed to initiate a payment and to authorise it.

I would imagine any business banking setup (which would often include clubs/societies) should offer this.

Good point! Do any providers offer left handed cheque books? You'd expect the Disability Discrimination Act to demand it!

Is left-handed-ness defined as a disability?

It was absolutely a tongue in cheek comment!

That said, I don't doubt some smart lawyer could prove a case and claim £millions for me!

Different yes. Disabled no. Discriminated against? To a point, but not in any way that offends me.

Wiki has a good article on the whole subject.

Also the problem is only going to get worse for cheques. I know that HSBC are encourging people to go green and a lot of people have gone green which means they no longer get a cheque book.
    .

I,m not convinced that HSBC are really being " green " I think that it is more down to their greed and money saving ethics. A few cheques are hardly going to make any difference to the planet.

Hard copies of statements are still required as proof of ID at many places, HSBC will make a charge to those that have elected to go " green " ( no hard copy statements ) I believe.

They seem to want it both ways.

I cant't wait for them to stop the cheques, they cause so many problems with regards to Fraud to a financial institution and then us honest consumers pay for it.

So you don't pay indirectly for:

    - passbook fraud at a counter?
    - card fraud at home and abroad?
    - electronic transfer fraud?

Fraud will ALWAYS happen. The methods will just evolve as the means of committing it change.

Don't use them! They are the equivalent of withdrawing cash with your CC and will start to incur interest immediately.
    File them in the shredder.

Thanks - don't worry I had no intention of using them and they sit in the bottom of my cross-cut shredder.

The point I was trying to make was that if a bank can issue credit card cheques in this extremely cheap way, then the same could apply to current account cheques (cheaper than the cost of issuing a full cheque book).

That said, I have in the past been sent credit card cheques that carry an interest free period and no useage fee. If I ever see those again they will be rapidly utilised and the balance of my savings accounts increased accordingly!!

We had better get rid of credit and debit cards as well as online transactions then, they are all subject to fraud.
