Thanks for the post, just ordered one. Already have Liteon 5006, great machine, this one will be connected to a freeview box in bedroom. Also bought 100 DVD-R discs and used the voucher you suggested (thank you) the discs didnt affect the postage value so all in all a terrific buy as I needed discs anyway, thanks.

If its the 5006 there is a bug in them that when you record 16.9 and upon playback on another device, it plays in 4.3 ratio rather than the correct ratio 16.9 its okay in the player but if you play like I do on a pc too, its in 4.3 I have the correct setting. I can see in the file on the disc that flags it as 4.3.
I have raised this with Liteon not that it did any good as I know other people have experienced the same problem.
You have to physical edit a file on a dvd to edit the flag in vts_ifo file, its a real pain in the bum. I have full instruction on how to do this, if anyone wants it.0 -
I bought the same model from Asda for £68.99
Beware If you are going to be recording from a Telewest cable box (and probably NTL as well), when you try to programme the recorder the cable box shuts down and then resets, so any of your programme settings for favourites etc or channel changes will be lost. I am not sure if it is an incompatibility with the remote control or there is feeback of some kind via the scart socket.
I found that on it's highest quality recording setting the quality was about the same as I got from my VCR
One good point in it's favour it can play DivX and Xvid
Personally I was very dissapointed with this model, I took it back, I am going to wait until I can afford a more expensive recorder."As if by magic... the shopkeeper appeared."0 -

Go for the Panasonic dmr-es10 from Tesco Extra stores at £110. Fantastic quality at a bargain price. Buy while u can and forget the cheap rubbish which will only give you grief, wasted dvds and ultimately, you'll only end up replacing it with a better model some time later

I have one of these machines and think its fantastic.
If you use DVD RAM discs you can watch a previously recorded program whilst you record another.

Does this Panasonic play DivX?0 -
No it won't play DIVX but don't let that put you off. Buy a compatible player and use this for recording duties - you know it makes sense
