Lingering dog poo smell in garden

I seem to be asking lots of questions on here tonight.
I don't know if anyone can help, or if this is the right place to post, but my garden smells from my dog's doings even though it is picked up (almost!) everyday. I have a small lawn which the dog uses as his toilet, but I've noticed this smell is there even when there is no poo around. Has anyone else noticed this? Any ideas as to how I can help counteract/absorb this smell, is there a product available? Or will I just have to dig up the lawn and put down something else instead.
Thanks

Oh I wish! I have the same problem, small lawn, poo picked up but still smell.
I wonder if it's our imagination?

  • It wouldn't be in the top 10 of things to imagine!!
I'm glad I'm not the only one, my husband can't smell it, lucky for him but then he can't smell all the lovely scents in the garden that you do want to smell!
  • Don't know why I am answering this thread because I'm surrounded by a wide variety of animal poop smells and none of it bothers me, but here goes ...

    a) are you sure it's a poop smell and not wee?
    b) do your dogs have a high meat content diet?

The best thing for getting rid of urine smells is soda crystals and malt vinegar - but that could kill your grass (never tried it on a lawn so don't know)

High meat content diets do tend to make poo smell stronger. One of my dogs has got a funny gut so the majority of his diet (not all) is made up of cereals. I make up my own with flaked peas/maize/oats and barley. His poo hardly smells at all - in fact the ducks follow him around (probably more info than you need)
Since you don't want to be buying and mixing all that stuff, try looking for a flaked cereal based mix, not the pellets/kibble stuff.

    Hope this helps :D

Are you sure the smell isn't coming from the bin or wherever you put your bags of poo?

We use nappy bags to put our dog poo in and you could smell it coming from the wheelie bin even though it was double bagged.

Now we bag it, leave the bag at the end of the garden and then I stick the nappy bag into a carrier bag and stick it in the litter bin when we go out for a walk. The council empty the litter bins every other day so it isn't left there for too long. Anyway, if she did it in the street you would have to bag it and bin it (we don't have any dog poo bins except in the local park).

  • ... just the animal feed merchant. I get macronised ones, and depending on where you live, costs about £6.50 upwards for a 25kg sack.

Actually the flaked peas and maize are also big constiuents of rabbit and guinea pig food - from what I saw when looking after someone else's animals last year - but being macronised rather than 'chemicalised,' to preserve them, they don't last as long, so don't store them anywhere cold/damp or they turn green (greener than they were to start with!)
  • I know it's not the bin where I keep my doggy doings as that is kept on the patio. It could be the meat content of his diet as I tend to give Ben dry food with a higher meat content rather than a higher cereal content. I didn't realise that this made a difference to the smell.

Yes, it really does make a heck of a difference ... not that I go around smelling it you understand:D
But my younger dog who is on kibble and tinned meat ... well, her poo stinks and I have to poopascoop. The other who is on cereal plus another type of tinned meat ... zilch, or near enough, and like I say, birds follow him around!!!!!
  • Dogs are what they eat. You should be able to pick the dog mess up in your hand, throw it into next doors garden and it shouldn't leave a mark in your hand.:D
I either cooked for my dogs (usually chicken breast and lightly steamed, blended vegetables) or fed them a really good quality dog food like James Wellbeloved Turkey and Rice.

My neighbours feed their dog on cheap dry dog food, plus digestive biscuits and ice cream and their dog's mess really smells for days.
RENTING? Have you checked to see that your landlord has permission from their mortgage lender to rent the property? If not, you could be thrown out with very little notice.
