  • I had one. 20 minute informal chat, quick look round the house and property, 2 cups of tea and a hobnob. Job done.

When we had a check, the lady brought her own elderly dog with her - bit miffed after mine had played with him and she then told us he had kennel cough :(

    we passed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :beer::T:j:D:cool: Congratulations!

ive never been that nervous for anything before ever!!!! (i thought i could get the OH to do the dishes for once :p) they took a look around out side, then came upstairs to ask us about our previous dog, how did he die, what age was he, what will we do if circumstances change ect.

the only problem weve got now before the dog comes home ( i really want to call her my little girl aghhhhhhhh no lol that is my pet hate, they are Dogs not babies! lmao ;) or by her name have you named her? Will you keep whatever name she has or change it? I just had to change my Rescue's name! but i dont want to get to attached yet) is that my brother's got to meet her first and get on with her before theyll let us take her home Hopefully the hard parts over now, if he likes Dogs i'm sure he'll love her!, so they know shes not going to be comming back a hour later with him, me and the oh with black eyes..

    cross your fingures for me!!!!!!!!!!!
I've got my fingers crossed & have instructed Chaya to cross her paws! Good luck & keep us posted & piccies too pls! Do you know when your Brother might get to meet her?

It's so exciting getting a Rescue, i've had mine for 11 weeks today & time has flown by, she's been absolutely amazing & I couldn't have wished for more. She doesn't chew anything & isn't destructive, she never barks, she can be left although the longest i've left her is for 4.5hrs & normally it's 2-3hrs at the most; I wouldn't leave her for any longer than 4.5hrs. They're such fun to have around!

Kimberley ~ Thanks for that info, it makes for interesting reading & is useful to people awaiting a home check or even thinking of adopting! I always wondered what a busy road (Almost said busy toad  ) was classed as too. I'm lucky in that i'm on a 20mph road & set back from it a long long way, we have a carpark, then a huge garden, then bushes & walkways etc before the road, so my Cat won't even go as far as the car park let alone to the road!

I never knew about the front garden or inner door either, it was something I hadn't considered, with mine I have a hallway so an inner door to the living room so can close that if I open the front door, NOT that lazy !!! Chaya budges from her armchair if the door goes!
  • Hopefully he'll be comming over on saturday :D

The centers gave her a name, i didnt like it at first but im warming to it now, the OH on the other hand hates it, weve still got thinking to do about that

My brother absolutley loves dogs, the only problem is theyve just got a dog in the center who looks like the spitting image of our last dog (charlie) who died and hes still a little upset sometimes (only when charlies mentioned or he sees a photo), hes got aspergers syndrome so it can still be a bit upseting for him years later.

ive got another question though, when we where at the rescue they where talking about giving us a voucher to get her spayed, but the woman yesterday was sounding like theyd do it there before we got her. have either of these happend to any of you? how long is it till there up on there feet again? (ive only really had boy's, i know its different for girls
  • My dog was speyed the day before I got her - she was fine, just kept her to short on-lead walks for the first week or ten days, and made sure she didnt jump on the furniture/go upstairs. Although she did jump on the settee as soon as she came in, but I told hr to get down and put her a soft cushion on the floor so she had a spot to get comfy!

If she isnt used to her name changing it wont be a problem - she will soon learn to answer to a new name!

    Hi Tiger :D

The front garden observation question was bought in through my experience. I live on a Main Road which is quite busy. These sort observations are very important if a person wants to adopt a lively dog who is a good escape artist. I had one when I first did my fostering and the bleedin dog got past us when the door was opened and it was just a relief that it was in the evening time when the traffic was slower because the dog ran over the road.
It's only through that incident that the rescue decided to add some common sense questions because some people would not have thought about having the front secured. I certainly did. The rescue knew then that this dog could only be homed to people who had a secure front garden.
If we had checked a home and thought that the people wouldn't have secured the front door by our observations and questions then they would have been refused.

We also do a three month follow up visit. We do not say when we are coming, we just let them know on the day. This is because many new owners do the opposite in what we have asked them to like we rehomed a dog to people and we had told them that the dog did not like being left for more then two hours. They ensured us that they did not work but we found out that they did part time. The dog was returned to us because it chewed their sofa and we did explain to them that the dog cannot be left.

The thing is that we have to trust the people we rehome our dogs to and even though we do the homecheck and have to believe what they tell us, once the dog is with them and we leave then we do not know what happens or how the dog is treated. Thats why some of the questions that I put above may seem daft to some but it is important to observe and ask these questions to those who have never owned a dog before.
