Don't know what part of the Uk you're from, but the Dover/Folkestone area is great for a break with kids of that age. Join English Heritage (about £36 for an adult I think) and you can take up to 6 kids into their properties with you free. Amongst their properties in that area are Walmer, Deal and Dover castles - Dover is fantastic...theres a really interesting part showing the part it played in WW2, as well as the ancient historic stuff. There are some lovely cliff walks, seaside towns etc plus you can get a cheap foot-ferry deal (try the weekend newspapers)and go to France for the day!.
There are plenty of Travelodges down that neck of the woods-maybe you could get one of their tennertastic deals?

Depends on how much you want to spend really ..... but you could take a look at centreparcs website. They have an offer of up to around 35% off some of their lodges. The price doesn't include food, but it does include access to the pool. That way you could just throw them in and then leave them to it.

If you're struggling to entertain them around the house baking is usually a hit with kids
