Great tel/broadband offers from 'Sky'

Options
I had a call regarding a telephone & broadband offer from a company purporting to be Sky yesterday.

I am wary of insurance companies calling about Sky, but as this was about telephone/broadband services and as I had just renewed my Sky contract after a 6 month break, I wasn’t suspicious at first.

The sales person, told me that she could offer a fantastic telephone & broadband deal at just £14.99 a month for BOTH my telephone lines (I have two). The deal she offered was

Free calls 24/7 from both lines
Up to 8 meg broadband & unlimited downloads
Free 1571 & caller display (both lines)
Calls to mobiles @ .4p connection + .3p per minute
Free Siemens phone for each line
Free wireless router

The alarm bells really started clanging when I explained that I have 9 months to run with my current provider and she told me not worry, as Sky will buy me out of the contract! I also asked whether this offer was conditional of having a Sky TV contract, and she said that I didn’t need to have Sky TV and could cancel my Sky TV contract with them, at any time and still keep the phone/broadband deal.

As I was now very suspicious, I explained that I would like to check the deal out further and make comparisons with what I have currently – but that I was interested and could she please call back he following day.

As soon as she put the phone down, I called Sky and spoke to one of their sales people, (who was very knowledgeable about their products and helpful). She explained that there was no such offer available, and that offers never cover two lines; and under no circumstances does Sky buy customers out of their existing contracts with other providers. When I explained that I had asked the person to call back the following day, she suggested I take their Sky ID No and get her to check my next billing date on the data base, which would mean that she has to log on and her ID No is captured on the record.

I had the follow up call today. I asked her to repeat the offer, which she did. Again, she clearly suggested that the company she represented was Sky and this was bone fide offer. I then asked her for the next billing date – but she said she couldn’t access the database (no reason why); so I asked her for her ID No. Instead, she gave me her phone number.

I called the number (0845 862 1533) and spoke to a man who told me the company is Satlink Networks, an insurance company. He also told me that they represent a company called Something Communications (!!)

I made a complaint about the sales call, explaining that his representative had clearly set out to mislead me. I also explained that had I not been suspicious and accepted her deal yesterday, it would have cost me a fortune in money, time and inconvenience – not to mention the problems I would have had with my current supplier.

Thank goodness my dad drummed into me ‘if the offer sounds too good to be true – it usually is’!

Just thought it was worth warning others.

Is anyone else tempted to phone the number above and offer them a new deal on their telephone/broadband package? Every hour, on the hour, for the next 3 weeks...
If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, we have at least to consider the possibility that we have a small aquatic bird of the family anatidae on our hands
