Is it the units under the sink that are broken or just the doors coming off?

Yep, you should be able to replace the doors very cheaply which will give a good first impression without costing the earth.

    post piccy of kitchen ...
  • First of all - thank you for all the replies - it is a real help and makes me think about alternatives.

The sink unit is actually collapsing as a whole. The drain used to back up and flood the kitchen. The water got into the chip board of the unit, and it is slowly melting like a very very protracted special effect. The actual top seems okay, so I think that if I just replace the carcass then it may look a lot better.

I cannot open either door or the drawer (front hanging off, inside collapsed inwards).

In the rest of the kitchen it isn't good, there is one drawer front missing and one which doesn't open, but the kitchen is very large and there are a lot of units, so I don't really feel the lack.

I know someone who used to fit kitchens who would help me out with the work at a reasonable rate, and his Dad would be extremely and vigorously stern with him if he ripped us off, so that is something.

Freecycle or local adds is also a good idea, as we could have half the units in this kitchen and still have plenty of storage space. There are also eleven power points.

I really appreciate all this help.

Also, I haven't worked out to post pics on here, and perhaps it is just as well, as I am so ashamed of it.

If you don't need as many units as you already have then you might find it easier to get something on freecycle and the space saved would let you make it look like a "dining kitchen". Extra table and chairs from freecycle maybe and a swathe of material hides a multitude of sins.

Have a look at some of the books in the library by Anne Maurice or others to give you some good cheap ideas.

Charity shops can be a good source for materials as well as "designer look " pieces that look expensive for very little.

Don't think "falling apart kitchen" - think shabby chic!!!;)

I think I might have a book that could give you some ideas- if DH has not helpfully tidied it away.

I'll put it in the post as a "play it forward" if you want?

Just a thought on your kitchen, I've seen this done in an old terrace house:

The sink was an old belfast type one and had been supported by brick piers, the w/m, fridge etc were under counter ones and the worktop was above them.

Everything else was on shelves supported by brick piers, ie no doors, this could work for you for all the base units, especially if you're subject to the odd flood.

Then if you could get some wall units that would give you storage with doors.

This should be really cheap as you said a lot of bricks were sitting around at the end of the street, a sink £100 off internet and mdf shelves and worktop £100 all in from Wickes.

But freecycle may get you something much nicer, so place a wanted ad.

    Good Luck

It may be better to have a couple of quotes handy to show potential buyers the sort of kitchen they could have and the costs.

  • You are all absolutely brilliant!!!

I am going to go away and have a think, and try and register on freecycle (again - had a lot of hiccups with that, but loads to offer!) and see what I can come up with. Just feeling that there are more options is a real help to me!

I really appreciate all this help, thank you so much. There are such lovely people on MSE.

    Thank you again.
