Single people, Elec only, avg readings please!

Hi there people,

I'm interested to know how much people are paying who are in similar circumstances as myself.

I live in a large studio flat. Everything is on electric.

Things which are pretty much constantly on:
PC & Fridge
I tend to heat the water up about an average of an hour a day.
I did have a halogen heater on pretty much all the time.
I use the washing machine on average 2 times a week.
Electric cooker, every night.
I use energy saving bulbs and during the evenings one light is pretty much on all the time.

This is my recent bill from Swalec:
Tariff : Economy 7
Period 7 Nov 2008 - 5 Feb 2009
Night Energy
Reading last time: 15638 Reading this time: 15991 Units: 353
Day Energy
Reading last time: 33668 Reading this time: 34733 Units: 1065

I pay £35 each month via direct debit and have done since I moved in here in late July 08.
Now my most recent bill outstanding is £222.06.

I was made redundant before the winter. So I've been in most days with my computer constantly on with the halogen heater on. I rung Swalec and they pretty much said it was the halogen heater so I've unplugged it and I'll begin to take regular readings.

My direct debit charges have been amended to £60 a month so that I can start paying the bill off but I'm just interested to know how much people are paying who are in a similar situation to myself before I attempt a change of energy supplier.

Thx!

Don't go to E-ON, their not as cheap as they make out. I pay so much for the gas in particular, my electric bill has gone up almost double from my previously supplier. I would recommend EDF Energy.

Why do you have Economy 7? If you don't have storage heaters, you'd almost certainly save money having a single rate tariff since you only use about 25% of your electricity at night. If no storage heaters, what's using so much at night?
  • I live in one bedroom flat, all electric, no gas. Im on single rate, not economy 7. I pay £115 monthly, and my december bill was £150 in debit. I am yet to recieve another bill, but expect it to be extremely high due to the recent cold weather. All electric flats cost a fortune. I work for British Gas and speak to sooo many customers that cry down the phone "I only live in a one bed all electric flat" ... I think they think im lieing when I compare there situation to my own.

I used to have a one bed flat, storage heaters (oh joy) and put between £15-£20 a week onto the meter (was prepayment) if that helps.

Two bedroom all electric flat, when I lived alone and did not use the heating 7.5KWH per day average. Summer with two of us living here and water heated forty five minutes a day 10KWH per day. This last quarter 12KWH per day heating one room only. Direct debit just increased to £34 a month, lots of 50W halogen lamps so a good proportion attributable to lighting.

  • i to also live in an all electric two bedroomed flat, with 1 large storage heater constantly been on since oct 08 and a medium sized one in the main bedroom only on alternate nights and second bedroom has small convector heater for my adult son. With 2 adults at work (occasional holiday time at xmas and new year) i was quite surprised my eletric bill for 10weeks was low at approx £15 per week. Im with southern electric and like i say we are all electric. I have a shower fitted but if we want baths i heat up water just for one hour. Also with the heating in bedroom 1 i turn the storage heater on then half way through the nite when i usually wake up at some point i turn the storage heater off as i find the storage heater too warm. but there is still enough heat in it 2 keep the room warm through the day and take the chill off at nite. I also have small pull cord heater in the bathroom but no heating in the hall or kitchen. My washing machine i tend 2 use in the evening about 4 times per week and put it on a clothes horse next to the storage heater in the living room overnight when that kicks out more heat and leave my dehumidifier running constantly until the washing is dry which i found cheaper 2 use than the tumble drier. I have saved £50 this year compared to last year.
  • sorry i forgot to put i am on economy 7 . last reading was 13029 now its 15179 on low reading = 2150 low units (nite rate) used. and 81956 last reading on normal now its 82491 on normal reading = 535 normal units (day rate). If that makes sense. Your tarrif must be a lot higher than mine. This reading was from 12th dec 08 to 19th feb 09 approx 10 weeks. I put approx £50 to £60 per month away for all my electric in the winter
