My sister asked me to have a look at my neice's laptop for her as it only seems to be starting in safe mode. If you try to start it up it runs through as if it is going to come on but all that happens is the windows logo comes up as normal but then it just black screen then goes to the boot from screen. Have run a diagnostic and the following error message comes up:
Error code 0146
Msg: Error code 2000-0146
Msg: Unit 1: DST log contains previous errors
The given code and message can be used by dell Technical support to help diagnose the problem
Do you want to continue testing.
Can't seem to access the dell site for some weird reason to see if it has any help on it. It is also outside of it's warranty which is why I am looking at it rather than dell but this has had me stumped. Was going to restore it to the factory settings but it is asking for a disc which the dozy mare hasn't given me. Also the first time I ran the diagnostic it froze so had to restart the computer so I am running it again. Any help would be much appreciated.

Did you try booting up throught a boot up disc rather than from the hard drive?
And also do you know that even if the warranty has expired you can still call them and they would help you diagnose the fault. I have a laptop which is 4 years old and even today when i have technical problem my first point of call is always dell technical helpline (0844 338 1000).
If a part has failed then obviously the dell warranty wont cover it but they will at least help you identify the problem..0 -
Many thanks for your advice. I will have to speak to my sister because the only disc not in her laptop bag was the boot up disc. So will need to ask her where it is. Will try that first when she gives me the disc but if it doesn't work then I will contact Dell.Dream as if you'll live forever - live as if you'll die today0

Make sure you have a back up of data before trying booting through the disc. If you dont then call Dell support and let them help you...0 -
Its not good news Im afraid.
That message means that the hard drive has either failed or is about to. I would be looking at backing up the data if there's any on it - use a usb caddy or similiar.
If you give me the service tag, I will check the system and see if its still under warranty etc.
If its under warranty then you'll get a new hard drive for free.“Hardware: The parts of a computer system that can be thrown out of the nearest window!”0 -
definently not under warranty. Managed to get onto the Dell site to check that but couldn't get anywhere when I was trying to troubleshoot.
Warranty ran out on 19/11/2008 - she didn't take out an extended guarantee on it which I did tell her to do.
Right next question is - is it easy to put a new hard drive in a laptop. Have upgraded and replaced PCs before but never actually been near a laptop.Dream as if you'll live forever - live as if you'll die today0 -

Yeah its pretty easy to replace a hard drive on laptop. Usually its just a small matter of removing two screws and the hard drive comes out (without need of opening back cover)....
Check ur manual...0 -
You could try a factory reset. If you hold ctrl+f11 when the dell splash screen comes on and let go of both buttons at the same time, You should be given the option of resetting the computer to it's original factory setting. Obviously this will wipe all other data off the system so try to back it up first, and only do this as a last resort.0

You can get the replacement HDD from around £40 on ebay0

Yep, turn it over and take out the 2-3 screws. The hard drive should then just pull out.
