Cheaper utility bills and VAT

When Martin was on TV the other morning, he was mentioning about the meagre cuts in the price of Gas and Electricity not coming into place until March 31.

One reason why the companies could be dragging their heels is that probably the government wants them to raise the extra VAT to pay the banks!

If they dropped their prices earlier then the companies would loose the extra profit on the high winter usage and the Government the extra VAT.

Maybe I am just being cynical.

  • I'm more inclined to the belief that the energy companies are waiting until all the big bills are out of the way and charged at the high prices  . Not that any of the decreases announced so far have been anything but derisory, of course (I have a feeling BG were the only company who took the threat of the Competition Commission investigation seriously and knocked 10% off their gas in a panic move- I wonder if in hindsight they regreat that now.)
