Secure tenancy rights

I have had a secure tenancy with private landlord for 30 years. The rent is fixed by Rent Officer 2 yearly and is considerably below the open market value. Due to personal circumstances, I may be forced to look elsewhere. However, its very difficult to think about doing this due to the financial implications for me - I would never be able to get a deal like I currently have.
I am one of the few people left with my landlord on the secure tenancy and I have been told that some landlords are prepared to offer financial compensation for the relinquishment of such a tenancy.
Has anyone previous experience of this situation, or does anyone know whether, if I write to the landlord, requesting financial recompense I would be jeopardising my position with them? From my point of view, I would think not and that it is just a question of a Yes or No response. Does anyone think I take legal advice before sending any letter?
Thanks!

If you are worried about tipping off the landlord that you may in any case soon be moving (so why pay you to do so), you could phrase the letter as if a relative may be offering you accommodation in return for a lump sum payment. Giving you the option of later saying that the relative withdrew the option.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. Call Shelter's helpline on 0808 800 4444 (7 days, 8--8) or talk to someone at a law centre or at Community Legal Advice on 0845 345 4 345 before you do anything.
