Savetalk for BT users

I was phoned this morning by an oganisation calling themselves Savetalk (from Cheshire) who purported to buy wholesale from BT so they can sell on cheap deals for phone and broadband, claiming they could almost cut my phone bill in half giving me the same type of deal I have now.
As they wouldn't send me any info in the post prior to sending out a welcome pack, I sent them packing.
Has anyone had a similar experience and does anyone know of this lot.

I received an unsolicited call from Savetalk on Friday morning. My Caller ID showed it as an 'International Out of Area' and I have TPS, so I was suspicious. I am also an authorised distributor for the Utility Warehouse, so I engaged the caller in conversation. She said she was called Cathy and that she was from Singapore (but claimed to be in Crewe). After several minutes during which 'Cathy' refused to provide detailed information about her company or their rates, I finally advised her that her call to me was illegal as I have TPS. At this point she started screaming at me down the phone saying I should have hung up at the start of the call and finally called me a lousy b*****d before hanging up! Sounds like the kind of company you'd really love to do business with.0

Welcome, both of you, to the MSE forums.
Two very useful posts!
Google finds this thread if you enter savetalk as a search term.
From other Google returns, I wonder whether you misheard slightly and we're really talking about safe-talk.co.uk (which shows up but only with a 'Site currently unavailable' tag and for which even the Cached - 27/7/09 - page gives no clues).Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0 -
and the moral of the story is never sign up to a supplier who cold calls you , do your own research for your own circumstances

Hi, new to the site and what prompted me to join was the above posts. I have just recieved a rather sarcastic and abusive call from 'cathy' at safe talk. I am registered with tps and when i told her this her response was (in a very sing song sarcastic tone of voice) 'oh, you are are, you? well you peole make me sick. you think you're going to sue ofcam for a thousand pooundsdo you?, well you're not registered with tps cos if you were, it would have shown up here and i wouldnt have called you, would i?'
The call went on in a similar vane for a few minutes. I told her i didnt want to sue anybody ,my father had just died and i didnt want a nusisance call when i had registered not to have them.
she then told me she wouldnt bother me seeing as my father had just died, so i said fine but give me a number to complain to before she went. she gave me my number and hung up.
i went to check if i was registered with tps and the site said i was, so i rang bt, my phone provider, like it advises you to do. got put thru to their nusiance calls department and they just said, if it was from abroad there was nothing they could do about it. i got the impression that they didnt care either. Thanks Dawn at bt for your overwhelming indifference.
ive also searched for safe talk and found a non existant web site. any ideas what it is or how we can make sure these sorts of calls get stopped?0 -

Nothing the TPS can do to control overseas companies, as it's jurisdiction is limited to the UK only I'm afraid. No free lunch, and no free laptop

I too have had a phone call from this organisation. She disconnected the call when I said, I am ex-directory, how did you get my number?
From how she addressed me, she has obviously got my NAME and phone number from BT. There is no other way in which she would have used a name that I have not used for 19 years! The phone bill is still in my old name.
I too am on the TPS lists.
I regard this type of calls as unwanted, intrusive and downright abusive.
Seems there is nothing to be done. The caller was calling from abroad.
