I'd not buy a 1.66GHz dual core laptop if it was Vista. For Vista I recomend 2.00GHz dual core and 4GB RAM. You can usually get RAM upgrades much cheaper than advertised, though.Ubuntu is an ancient African word, meaning: 'I can't configure Debian'.0

If you are on a tight budget then getting as much RAM as possible will have the most positive effect on speed for your money. The incremental benefit of moving from a 1.66GHz to 2GHz processor would probably be negligible and RAM is generally cheap nowadays. How much RAM do you have now? It may just be easier to upgrade that for say £50, but like timbim says if you do get a new computer with Vista I would recommend a decent amount of RAM.0

thanks for that , so i am looking for really a 2.00ghz with at least 4gb ram with a dual core? but which processors are best i believe there ae a few doferent ones, AMD , PENTIUM ETC
at the moment she has a dual core processor t2300 ,1.66 ghz + 2gb ram running windows xp
thanks in advance0 -
There are two main processor manufacturers - AMD and Intel (now my processor knowledge is about 1 year out of date as thats when I brought my computer!) but AMD tend to offer good but cheaper processors, Intel can offer what is considered the one of the better processors - Core 2 Duo.
Now the specs you have mentioned aren't that bad - I have a Core 2 Duo 1.66 GHz with 1GB RAM and don't have any problems with slowdown. How old is the computer? Is there much hard drive space left? Maybe it could do with a quick reinstall of Windows, as after time the computer just begins to slow and a reinstall fixes it. If the computer is just used for word processing/internet/music playing then top end specs are not needed.0 -
sporty - if you're having problems with that lappy running slow, I'd suggest giving it a good cleaning out and by that I mean a GOOD going over. Don't waste money on buying a new one until you've actually established whether the lappy is just bunged up with crap, viruses, spyware, temp files, too many backup and restore points, etc., etc., the spec and OS combination are not bad at all, so if it's slow I'd start looking for WHY it's slow...
eg. how long is it since it had a full disk cleanup (including old restore points) and a decent defrag of the HDD ??? How long since any decent anti-malware and anti-virus was run ??
I'd suggest:-
1. checking what security progs are on there
2. starting with disk cleanup and defrag (do defrag twice, back-to-back, especially if it's not been done ever/for a while.
3. Download Hijack This, Malwarebytes antimalware, CCleaner, and suerantispyware. (really must keep those links handy..RIK'll shout at me
) and run both registry and cleaner scans of CCleaner, and delete everything it finds...
4. update and run full scan with MBAM, delete all it finds (note - some things may need a re-boot to fully remove), save the log to post here
5. update and run full SAS scan, as above
6. run HJT and post log on here for further advice.....
I honestly don't think you should be having slow running issues with this spec of lappy...more likely to be bogged down...a few hours of work may indeed save the whole cost of a new lappy...if not, well, it hasn't cost anything other than a few hours of time...good MSE practice

Ok will try and do that see how it goes and i,ll let you know :T0 -
It goes without saying that an unattended laptop "goes fastest" -never to be seen again!0

Sporty you have some good advice, you really don't need a new laptop.
Before you do what Gun jack recomends, how full is your hard disk?0 -
Doing the cleanup and defrag will show this, in a slightly better light than if he does it straight away...it could be very  to look first
