Returning car - refund of tax?

Options
I've had my Toyota for three years, and I'm choosing to Voluntary Terminate my lease contract and return the vehice. I've already got my replacement car, it's taxed, insured and used daily, so I no longer use the Toyota. I'm just waiting for it to be collected.

If I'm returning it, can I claim the road tax back or am I expected to hand it back to Toyota taxed? It's got another five months on it, so a refund would be about £70 since the Toyota's a large engined diesel car. I would ask Toyota's personal finance people, but they've proved to be less than impartial in the past, and I know I'll get an honest answer if I ask here :)

If it is leased, I would assume the tax is paid by the lease company, therefore it is their money to reclaim or to leave on the car if it is re-leased, but if you taxed the car, then it is yours to reclaim, as it would be on top of the lease charge.

  • When I returned my citroen at the end of the two year lease I took the tax disk off when they came to collect it (I had paid the car tax myself). You can get a form from the post office (I printed it off from the dvla website) and you just fill it out and stick your tax disk on to it. Post it off and hey presto they send you a cheque for the remaining months. They only refund full calender months though so you will get nothing for feb but as long as they receive your form by 1st March they will refund March onwards. Hope this helps.
