Just looking for a new car. I already have a golf 1800cl but its getting very old.

Does anyone have experience of the 1.6 Fsi mk5? has it got plenty of power for motorways/longish trips in comfort?

I feel like a bore buying another Golf but they are very good cars..! I did read that the mk5 2.0S Sdi is to be avoided as its underpowered and hard work

Can anyone recommend any good rivals for the 16 fsi? I tend to keep cars a long time and am a pretty low mileage driver..

Do you use rough roads at all?

My only complaint about the Golf 5 is it is rather low and the sump can take a knock. Might not be an issue but worth thinking about.

IIRC, 1.6 & above Golfs are going to be taking a hammering when the new road tax regs come into force next year.

My Mum had an Audi A3 1.6 FSI for 3.5 years and about 20,000 miles. Essentially the same car as the Golf 1.6 FSI.
It has plenty of go in it for long trips between Hampshire and Glasgow, returns around 38mpg in the real world.
I would also look at the Mazda 3, has more character, more fun, cheaper to buy and run. Arguably, more reliable.

I read somewhere that the FSi engine is very ecomonical, but also kicks out a fair bit of power.

Golf's tend to hold their value very well, so you wont lose out if you sell it at some point in the future.

It is supposed to be, but in the real world 38mpg is what we saw, up to 40mpg on a long trip, which isn't that special really. Performance is decent for a 1.6. Still a good engine, just not as economical as the FSI marketing hype would lead you to believe.
  • if you like visiting the main dealers all the time its a great car, if not, look for something else

FSI enignes should use high octane fuel which is a similar price to diesel. If it hasn't been since new it can cause problems later on.
