Sorry if this is in the wrong place.....
Where do you tend get your ingredients for baking? I'm heading off to the mainland this weekend and it would be useful to know where's reasonable (not that many places are in the current economic climate!) to build up my baking store cupboard again, without having to trawl round all the supermarkets and other places.
I need to top up on
sugar (brown, icing, caster)
flour (all varieties)
Butter
baking powder/Bic. Soda/Cream of Tartar
Other bits - coconut, nuts etc
Any pointers and prices would be useful - thanks in advance:T

Soft brown sugar is 69p for 500g in Aldi
Unsalted is on offer in Asda 47p at the mo
Baking powder etc always seems cheaper at Asda too.
Nuts I get from Julian Graves

I get mine from Asda, nessie.
I suppose it depends on just where on the Mainland you're heading though. I know that supermarkets in Northern Scotland are more scattered than around here. Would you actually have much choice on where to get stuff?
Sometimes the Health Food shops sell reasonable quantities of stuff useful for using in cakes, glace cherries, dried fruit, chopped nuts etc. But for basic cake making stuff (flour, sugar, butter/marge etc) it usually has to be one of the major supermarkets. Occasionally there's bagains to be had from the Co-op as well.
Are you getting the Cal-Mac across? If so, hope it's a smooth journey. We travelled from Mallaig to Eigg, Rum and Canna last summer and it was a glorious journey.

I picked up 2 packs of Be-ro last night in Morrisons. I think the offer was 2 for £1.20. This offer was running to 1st March. There was also a lot of other stuff relating to Pancake Day.Must learn not to count chickens before they are hatched!!!!:D
Every day is a new challenge not a new problem!:p

Hi nessie,
I use a mix of Asda and Tesco as I have both close to me.
If you go to www.mysupermarket.co.uk and enter in the products you want to buy it will tell you which supermarket is cheaper at the moment.

Tecso as their range seems to be bigger than anywhere else and the local coop for things like nuts, fruit and specialised flours when baking for fussy people! There are many things in life that will catch your eye, only a few will catch your heart. Pursue those.0

Apparently Costco are good for baking powder, I'm going to have a look in there today.“A budget is telling your money where to go instead of wondering where it went.” - Dave Ramsey0

Thanks for your replies everyone.
I'm heading off tomorrow morning and heading to the central belt, so will have access to Tesco, Morrisons, Asda, Sainsbury, Aldi and Lidl.
Pink winged - thanks for the link, that will save me some time!
Olliebeak - Cal Mac is our only option unless we flyIt's just under a 3 hour ferry crossing from Stornoway to Ullapool, so I'm hoping that it's calm! It can be a bit choppy in the middle......

I buy most of my stuff in lidl and aldi as they are cheaper than the bigger stores, but certain items are only stocked at the supermarkets. Defo lidl or aldi for the flour and sugar. Got some cocoa powder and pizza base mix cheap in aldi this week.ali x"Overthinking every little thing
