Baking Ingredients - where do you get yours?

  • I get most of mine from morrisons, mostly because I've found their flour to be really good quality, especially their strong white flour.
I get nuts from Aldi or Julian Graves.
Aldi is very good for dark chocolate too, great big blocks for not very much - sorry can't remember price, but good enough for us to stock up on it.
They do some nice pretty little bits in Aldi too, nice decorative things for the tops of cakes which are really useful and under £1.
Anyone fancy buying my degree? It will only cost you £18k.

Just spotted on the grabbit forum, Tesco value butter is now 47p. I'm going to stock up and put some in the freezer.

  • I went to the Co-op today before coming home and as it's coming up to Fairtrade fortnight, they've got 20% off all Fairtrade products until 7 March - so got some Co-op own label dark and light brown sugar for 65p for 500g bags and a kg of Tate & Lyle Icing Sugar for £1.30.

Daisy_S - I'm a convert to Aldi and Lidl's dark chocolate products, find them lovely :) It's also good in Rocky Road too ;)

Stork block margarine makes great cakes and pastry. After you open your bag of flour, it helps to keep weevils at bay if you store it in a tupperware box or something similar.
  • Asda had weevils not long ago too, you should return the flour and list what you have lost, Tesco should refund you.
I Have used Asda, Sainsbury and Aldi value flour and I buy butter/marge - whatever is on offer and freeze some too

i got in touch with tesco but they wanted a list of bar codes, took them 2 days to reply to email, as soon as i seen weevils i chucked everything out. never had a problem with them before and ive been buying flour for 10 years, until i tried value stuff. its really put me off buying any flour though.

    stork margarine (block and tub)
value plain flour, and add baking powder as necessary
whatever caster sugar is on offer

tbh, i have no idea what weevils look like, so based on that, we have prob eaten lots of them over the years, as i dont check the flour before using

I've read that the Americans tend to freeze flour for a few days, then take it out and put in a container. This will destroy any eggs lurking in the flour, its just something that comes with flour production. Most bags of flour are fine though.
