  • 50 miles on a 50cc? Blimey your other half deserves a knighthood for that!!

I have ridden bikes for the last 20 + years and currently commute 160 miles per day. However mine is a 1300. I tend to go for Hondas as the build quality is second to none (in fact I have found them to be better than BMWs). They also last like no other. However my slight caveat to that is that I find Honda parts and servicing to be more expensive than others. I suggest as others have said going for the 125 from one of the big four (Honda, Suzuki, Yamaha or Kawasaki). All are of a comparable quality.

Please remember that on a bike you are vunerable and make sure that the bike is servicable and safe. Far to many times have I been tarmac surfing not to pay upmost attention to making sure the bike is tip top!!

hehe. well to be fair we all said that when he got it, but he was adement he wasnt confident enough for a 125. He changed his mind in ooooooo 2 months! Too late then

I have been scouting around those places. Am hoping it can be fixed. Its in REALLY bad shape its been knocked that much. But current problem is loss of drive which happend, stopped, then happened again, and a knocking instead of drive when your use the throttle. Am hoping its not the drive belt, coz if it is, it went while being used and the engines !!!!!!ed. So its GOT to be a new one. There just dont seem very many for sale at the mo

Oh yes, loss of drive = no forward motion, never heard of this particular model, but it sounds like something broke, like a gear stripped, it could be a 20 pence woodruff key, or the crankshaft. By coincidence i am working on a 1971 MZ250 just repaired the kickstart , new gasket, oil etc, only for the clutch to slacken on it's taper, so no drive, have to take same bits back off again to put it right. Not as bad as my 850 Yamaha tho'. It burnt an exhaust valve in Kent, and limped back to Watford Gap services, where i stopped for a cuppa and got duped into joining RAC, barely had i got onto the M6 when the transfer box stripped all it's teeth, RAC took us home and i was able to buy a SH one for 15 and fixed the next day. YEP Get him a Honda CG125.

An MZ250? Blimey they were old work horses! Ever reliable and cheap to run! I seem to remember that MZ bought out a range of sportsbikes about 10 years ago. Whatever happened to them? Did they go under? i wonder if any of those bikes are still knocking about!

I really envy anyone thats good with mechanics. I can do the very basics like chain tightening and washing. After that it goes to the bike shop! Not very money saving but I am such a ham fisted goat i would do more damage trying to DIY it! :D

invaluable information guys! If this scooter does fix, i'll be coming back to this thread when it is replaced!
1 question. All those you suggest, are they gears or twist and go? As they dont teach you gears on you CBT. The plan is to get him legal on motorbikes anyway, but for the posible short term its a sticking point. How can you tell which is which when they dont put that detail. (barr calling them)

Almost all traditional motorbikes will be manual gears. If it is a scooter then more than likely it will be twist and go, unless it is an older scooter such as a vespa or lamberetta (they were good fun!). To be honest, half an hour in an empty car park and he will be used to the gears no problem.

yeah the sports bikes were mainly bought by amateur racers and ended up as trackday bikes, and in club racing, some crop up on e-bay from time to time. The commuter bikes were sent to be made in Turkey, but suffered from poor quality control, MZ has now closed as it was unviable, shame it had a great history, but one day some wealthy german entrepreneur will buy the name and resurrect something from the ashes.
