My husbands scooter that he goes to work on is knackered. It was bought new just over a year ago, for £800, it was a 50cc V-clic. Wish we had never bothered. But he needs it to get to work. Otherwise am taking him to work. While its a system that works, he missing out on 11-15 hours of overtime because of it. Money we need to clear the debts quicker.
So heres the kanunderum.
A. Do we spend as little as pos to get as cheaper scooter as pos to get him through till crimbo, by which time we will have paid the debt and could save for a decent one, plus he may have passed his motorcycle test. (he on an L plate)
B. OR do I use the £700 in 0% purchase I have till June, (virgin so will pay this off b4 the transfer provided this is paid back before the time runs out) and get him a scooter thats a bit more, meaning I can deal with trade and the posibility it wont break down
C. OR use that and add from the 2.6k in savings we have that are there to back us up in case of emergancy such as failing to miss a mortgage payment. We both have income insurance, but in the current job climate, am worried that 12 months wouldnt be enough to get new jobs. Was thinking of adding bout 1k.
I just dont know. I dont want to be throwing good money after bad.

Oh av been there. at his last job I had him cycling a 17mile round trip. No, new job is 20-25 miles away. So as much as I would love to get him to cycle, I suspect his answer would be 'get knotted'. heheThe will to save every money saving penny we can0

it also isnt on a bus route. Not a suitable one anyway. To get there for 6am, I doubt theres a bus and it would mean 2 buses, and there are no schemes linking to 2 towns we could use. Its got to be personnel transportThe will to save every money saving penny we can0

The over time earns an extra £100 too, thats per week, so not to be sniffed atThe will to save every money saving penny we can0

I have had motorbikes in my blood for 35 years and have a few thoughts.
what is at fault with the little 50cc scooter that can't be fixed, or is it not viable to repair it?. I would go straight for a 125cc four-stroke bike from Honda or yamaha, not a cheapo chinese copy, something as new and decent as you can get for about 500 gbp. Look on e-bay, or free newspaper ads or local motorbike shop window, it's got to do 8 thousand miles in ten months. Find a local biker who will service it and keep an eye on it for you, adjust chain, change oil etc. I would not expect anyone to travel upto 50 miles a day on a fifty cc scooter, thats just cruel !!0 -
hehe. well to be fair we all said that when he got it, but he was adement he wasnt confident enough for a 125. He changed his mind in ooooooo 2 months! Too late then
I have been scouting around those places. Am hoping it can be fixed. Its in REALLY bad shape its been knocked that much. But current problem is loss of drive which happend, stopped, then happened again, and a knocking instead of drive when your use the throttle. Am hoping its not the drive belt, coz if it is, it went while being used and the engines !!!!!!ed. So its GOT to be a new one. There just dont seem very many for sale at the moThe will to save every money saving penny we can0 -
Fair enough re cycling, that is a bit far at 5/6am. From what you're describing re the scooter i would, if it were my money, scrap that and invest in something much more reliable. in my experience, 50cc scooters/mopeds etc are for 16 yr olds who want to whine around the local high street, not 50 mile round commutes. As urco says, a 125cc four stroke would be your best bet and again, if it were my money, a Honda CG125 would be it for me..... almost 100mpg, cheap parts and cheapo tax and insurance, coupled with Honda's reliability make it a winner for me.

The above guide to running costs may need tweaking for todays petrol prices/insurance but essentially quite accurate...

A couple for examples sake. Again, Urco was quite right. Stay well clear of the cheap crap copy bikes, more pain that they are worth:

Stay clear of this type of bike.
Buy a genuine HONDA machine, it'll be worth the extra pounds......0 -
I don't know where you are in the country but this is maybe a great bargain....
