Monthly budget for family of four

Hi,

In approx 3 yrs time we will be returning to the UK (Suffolk) to live , after several years abroad. I was wondering how much we would need to budget each month for expenses. Two adults and two children who will be 7 and 5 when we return. We won't have a mortgage or any loans to pay off. Just run the house, one car, food, electricity, telephone, petrol etc. Would like Sky-digital, broadband and one mobile phone. Have gas central heating and council tax will be about £100 pm. I realise prices will be different in 3yrs time but would like some idea what things are like now. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks.

  • LOL - here I am, scouring the board again for neglected and abandoned posts! :D

I think you would probably get more answers to this on the debtfree board. Or you could just scan the board - quite a few people have posted what it costs them to live (at a very basic level) and you could extract the costs for running the house, one car, food, electricity, telephone, petrol etc. from that.

I can help you with the car thing - petrol is around 91p a litre atm, plus allow £250 PA for servicing costs, £50 for AA, £110 for road tax, insurance is unpredictable as relies on where you live plus your track record and the value of car - maybe £500? This assumes you buy a fairly newish car which is maybe under warranty and won't need major repairs.

My prediction is that Sky will not be worth paying for in 3 years time - FilmFour is about to come on to Freeview, Sky 3 is already on it, so in 3 years you will definitely need only a FV box (or a telly which has FV built in :))

I pay £25 a month for one of the very best broadband suppliers - Eclipse.

Mobile phones vary wildly in cost - I pay a fiver a month for mine with free calls to home and to husband's mobile, but this is part of a package (One Tel)

  • Thanks for that. I had scoured the board a bit but couldn't find aything that fitted my circumstances. I'll try again and also try the debt free board. Thanks again for your input.
