Most water companies and power companies are offering cover for burst pipes and blocked drains for a fixed fee each month. Do not bother! our drains where blocked, so i called the phone number for responce. 2 days later
the drain cleaning company sent by Severn Trent attended and inspected the drains. the blockage was on the next door garden. as the blockage was not on our property they refused to clear the blockage, in went the tools and off into the sunset. our drains were still blocked!!!!!!!. so out with the yellow pages to find a local company. We found a local company in Hinckley who attened and cleared the blockage for £55.00. split between me and next door fast and damm good.I have now cancelled the drain cover as its not worth wasting money on. I only had the cover as they tell you about ripoff trademen stories to get you to sign up never again!!!!!

About six months ago I cancelled our cover for this with Thames Water. Think it was about twelve quid a quarter and I'd been paying it for years without question. Needless to say, a couple of weeks ago our external drain next to the kitchen was overflowing. After spending an afternoon in the freezing cold, lying on my stomach prodding away with a stick trying to unblock it, I decided to search on this site and of course, found the answer on one of the OS threads - caustic soda! Searched most of the DIY stores in northwest London (apparently it's "carcinogenic" and no one stocks it) but finally located it. As someone posted on here, "It would move a mountain" and thankfully, it lived up to its reputation. Ever since, I've spent most of the time I haven't been on here, checking the drains and just a satisfying gurgle so far!

Update. The drain cleaning company from Hinckley Leicestershire who cleared our blockage also offer a fixed price drain clearing service which covers all external and internal sinks toilets etc, the price is £48.00 per year. With this service contract you get a list of common faults such as flush handle,sink traps and syphon unit repaired with new items all at a fixed price e.g new syphon unit £15.20 fitted inc callout. the list covers all basic plumbing needs but exclues the heating system. I feel this is better value for money than what homeserve though severn trent were offering
