looking for an august family holiday

I wonder if anyone can help -
I'm looking for an august holidayfor a family of 2 + 2. I'm looking for sunny but not too hot, non-tacky (not trying to be snobby, but don't want a drinking holiday type nightlife or any haven-type we could get in the uk) and good value for money.
At the moment the web prices seem a lot more expensive than brochure prices, and free child places non-existent.
Any suggestions where to go or how to get cheap would be very much appreciated.

Define 'cheap.' What is your budget, where can you fly from and how long do you want to go away for?
  • Hello,

You don't say if you want to do a package or DIY holiday. I'd champion the latter - I've found it works out cheaper for me and my partner, and we get a whole villa/apartment etc, rather than just a hotel room. Great if you've got kids!

We usually use Holiday Lettings to book - but as Incapuppy says, without the specifics, I can't really help you other than recommend the site.

Unless you really want sunnier climes, why not holiday in the UK? You can save on flights and spend the extra on a really nice place, if you're so inclined. Or just pocket the extra! I grew up on family holidays in Devon and Wales and have so many good memories.

Or how about Northern France? Get the ferry (again surely cheaper for a car than for 4 return flights) and enjoy baguettes, croissants etc. Your kids will love exploring the local patisserie I'm sure!

    Thanks for the replies.
We do want somewhere with good weather in Europe, but not too hot.
Budget would depend on holiday, eg Italy (sorrento / garda) £2000, Spanish islands £1500. Less would be good!!
I would prefer package to save on hassle, but would do DIY if it was a LOT cheaper.

  • How about France. I have a house on the West Coast and it is in an area that is the second sunniest area in France near La Rochelle. I get a cheap flight from East Midlands to Nantes and drive down 2 hours on practially empty motorways. You can even get a flight direct to La Rochelle with Ryanair if you are near Stansted. Easy to hire a car and plenty of Gites to rent. Ile de Re is just off the coast where the rich Parisians go (also Johnny Depp) and is very up-market and picturesque but not at all snobby. Can't recommend it enough. Locals are really friendly and helpful and English is readily spoken and understood. Just my two penneth!
There are three ways to get something done; do it yourself, hire someone or forbid your kids to do it.
