Hi

Looking for a hol for myself and OH - (my kids are going with their dad this year) and I liked the look of Crete but we're too old to end up in a clubbing resort so want somewhere relaxing but with plenty to do:confused:

grateful for any advice;)

  • Went to Elounda last July and thought it was lovely. Beaches there not up to much but we had a fab villa (Elounda Carob Tree Villas) and a fab pool and relaxed there in between days out. It is quite a stunning island.

Website I found very useful was makeitgreece.net or .com something like that!
Aim to win in 2013 - a holiday somewhere nice, New York break, treats for family & friends & some cash would be lovely!!!

Look at the Western side. Somewhere near to Chania, which is a lovely town.
No reliance should be placed on the above.

We've been to Sissi in Crete, it's a beautiful place. Really loved it. http://www.explorecrete.com/crete-east/sissi-crete.htm

If you're not into clubbing DON'T stay in Hersonissos, it's a mad place!!!

I've been to Kos, really liked it there. Also been to Corfu, I wasn't too mad about there.

I'd definitely recommend Crete by far the best holiday we've ever had. The food, the sun & the locals are so friendly.

Best of luck where ever you decide to go. You won't regret it. :)

We stayed in Hotel Amandeus. Really nice & clean. The rooms were fairly spacious too.

I haven't been to Stalis but my friend has & loved it. It's very much liked by British & Irish tourists.

  • Can wholeheartefly recommend Crete. Look at www.sunvil.co.uk who are really top-notch. If they're out of your price-range, note the locations they offer and search for similar accommodation with another operator. Good choice!

I'd recommend western Crete too (anything that flies into Chania rather than Herakilion)

    I've been to Stalis.

Narrow beach, Its a coast road resort (the coast road is more a tarmacked track), the main road runs behind the resort.

So you can wander up & down this road dodging the mopeds/quad bikes & the odd car:D

Its a medium sized resort. Malia is down the road, Stalis bleeds into it, the beach the far side of Malia is better (whiter & wider).

Some nice restaurants. Heronision (sp?) has a nice harbour to have a meal at at night.

Plenty of cheap busses (air con coaches actually;) ).

Chaina (pronounced with a silent C) is supposed to be lovely. I think its a quieter region & a bit more up market - never been this side (west) if I go again I would like to go here.

Ag Nik is nice & has quite an upmarket feel too & better beaches than Stalis. Quite cosmopolitan:D

I had a home in Crete for some years. If you don't want the 18-30 scene then avoid Malia like the plague but do consider Elounda, which has exclusive but not overly expensive hotels, including the only 5* one on the island, to the east of Heraklion. It's a beautiful village with a sandy beach and a tideless lagoon, the sunken city of Olous, amazing scenery, not far from Knossos for Minoan ruins, Cato and Pano Elounda, Sifliki and Plaka for typical Cretan villages, Spinalonga Island for a boat trip, and Sitia, the home of excellent Cretan wine. The Cretans are some of the friendliest and most welcoming people you could wish to meet, not just after taking your money. I sound like a travel agent but I'm not, I assure you - just spend some of the best years of my life there :D
