Decorating question

Hi guys :hello: I have a decorating question I was wondering if someone could help with....

I desperately want to decorate my lounge (it's about time, we moved in in May 2007!) but the previous owner has painted the lounge in the most bizarre way.

It's hard to describe but the texture of the paint feels grainy, gritty, coarse and rough. It's like a sand effect, feels quite sand paper.

I want to paint over it but I'm guesing the texture will just remain the same? I hate it! Any have any idea what sort of painting it is and the best and most MSE way to sort it out?

Many Thanks

are you sure its the paint? and not wallpaper underneath?
if its paper, then strip it off.
if its textured paint then either sand it down with an electric sander, or get a plasterer to skim over it.
    Get some gorm.

i think it may be better getting a plasterer in to skim over it than trying to sand or steam it will be laborious and probably messy.

You should not plaster over wallpaper! That is a bodge and it is likely to fall off in places eventually.

  • It could be a rough finished plaster - you can create this by brushing over "touch-dry" plaster with a wet brush. Or I'm sure I've seen an "interior decorating" idea that adds sand to paint, so that could be it.

You need to determine whether they've painted on plaster or wallpaper - the latter is easy to spot ... just look for the joins; either vertically or where the wall meets the skirting or ceiling.

The current base (paper or plaster) determines how you tackle this.

  • Many Thanks for all your replies.

It is definately plaster they have used this horrible paint/sand combination on, not wallpaper.

So the best thing to do would be get a plaster in then? Apologies for the ignorance, but is it likely to be an expensive job? (Probably not much help, but it is a small room, possibly 10 meters by 7)

    Thanks

That's a huge room. Are those measurements right?

    10 feet x 7 feet surely?

I wondered that and then thought it was a bit of a small lounge.

I think you'll do well to get it done well for £300 but stranger things have happened.
