Out Of A Job - tax back?!

I've just been dismissed from my job. They've agreed to pay me my notice & holiday etc. The tax man has taken a much larger bite out of my paycheck, n I don't see the point of gettin' that money back through claiming benefits..
Anyone know if I can get the tax back? £650+ would be good right now. And, since it was a one-off payment, the student loan people have taken £100 off me.
The timing is stupid. This is my 1st post too!
