Norwich Union Shares Never Received?

I was talking with a colleague at work today who mentioned she has a NU endowment that matures in about 4 years. We got talking about the shares that were distributed by NU in the 1997(?) and she said she never received any shares.

Her situation is she and her ex-husband had a joint with profits endowment taken out in around 1988. They separated in 1994/5 and sold the marital home, both were then in rented accommodation and both moved several times over the next few years. My friend was assigned the endowment as part of their divorce settlement which they sorted out themselves, without legal representation, in 2000/1. My friend then remarried and when she told NU some years later in 2005/6 about her marriage and change of several addresses, she also deal with the assignment of the policy.

Does anyone know who to contact to establish whether the shares were issued and if not how to get hold of them. I would have thought when NU assigned the policy to her they would have picked up on any allocated shares.

Is it possible the ex-husband as first named on the endowment would have been allocated the shares as NU were unaware of their separation etc when the shares were distributed? However my friend is certain her would have told her about the shares and not seen her off and kept them.

Any advice / direction would be greatly appreciated.
