Exploring New York as a lone female traveller

I am really keen to go to New York but to take the whole family, we a talking a lot of money plus they are very young and won't really be interested in museums, shopping and sightseeing.
My sister in law has done it on her own for a weekend of shopping and she wouldnt hesitate to do it again. It's just the fact that I would be totally alone and there would be no-one watching out for me. I have been to european distinations on my own and not found it a problem.
Just wondering if anyone knows of any good companies that cater for lone travellers that perhaps will all meet up during the day for sightseeing etc.
Any advice, greatfully appreciated.
Many thanks

What is it you're worked about?
You'd be far more likely to be attacked or something if you were male, and you've been away on your own before, so you obviously know how to look after yourself.
Just keep your wits about you, don't do anything silly, and you'll be fine.0 -
My first trip to NYC was on my own. It was fab [apart from being freezing cold]...but why not go with the SIL if you don't want to go alone?0

I went with my two children felt perfectly safe; on the evening you could see a show by yourself, no problem. I did that in London recently, also ate alone, enjoyed it tbh, as long as I have a book I have company.:D
Why not consider the big apple greeters?
Its a free service and the person will show you round the city. 1 to 1 could be really interesting.

Also when I was there there were plenty of guided tours as well.
Go for it, you will enjoy it. It was one of the safest places I've ever visited infact it almost felt like disney! I felt a little cheated!
better then being robbed I know....can't please some!
But if ever I stray from the path I follow
Take me down to the English Channel
Throw me in where the water is shallow And then drag me on back to shore!
'Cos love is free and life is cheap As long as I've got me a place to sleep
Clothes on my back and some food to eat I can't ask for anything more0 -
I felt safer in NY than most towns in the UK.There seemed to be a policeman for every member of the public.0

I would not hesitate to go to NYC alone, from a safety perspective - but it is nice to travel with someone else to share the experiences with. JMHO

there is a interesting forum on here all about being out and about in NYC http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=1403101
If you have done european cities alone NY will be a breeze transport above and below ground is simple and grid system roads so you know exactly where you are and going to.
My only thought is for people that have never been is the is a language difference between English and New Yorkers they honestly struggle to understand each other
enjoy it and just do it:cool:  hard as nails on the internet . wimp in the real world :cool:0 -
Go for it! I can understand your hesitations, I would have some concerns if travelling alone too. I would say stay in a hotel that is somewhere easy to find, somewhere with a good rating (tripadvisor) and also familiarise yourself with the underground/buses etc and streets before you go so you feel confident finding your way around when you get there. As mentioned, there are police everywhere and I found the people quite friendly. Just enjoy spending time on your own, with no one else to worry about, you can do what you want when you want! Also do get onto the New York thread here, lots of good tips and friendly people, well worth the read! x0
