Charges for maestro card problem

Not sure if this is the place to ask or under current accounts section.
I bank with the Ulster Bank in northern ireland who have given me a maestro card. I use this account mostly for a bit of matchbetting on the internet. The problem is the balance doesn't always tally with what transactions have actually taken place. For Example, over the weekend i checked online and it showed i had £53 available, so i withdrew £50 from the atm and today when i check it shows im £37.13 overdrawn. This means i've a £30 charge to look forward to at the end of the month for going overdrawn.
I thought the whole point of a debit card is that you can only spend what you have?? I could see if it told me my balance was £53 and available £15 but it tells me i have £53 available.
This is probably about the 4th or 5th time this has happened over a year. Any ideas whats going on here? Is maestro cards debit cards?
