The calls are not FREE because you have to purchase credit to be able to get them.

Yes, it's exactly the same terms as Voipcheap now and has been there for a while

It's not, but it's VERY cheap. But it's NOT.

In fact, it's too-good-to-be-true cheap because THE REAL COST is £0.015 (1½p per minute) not £0.0015 (0.015p). Because they cleverly leave out the currency symbol on their website, it's an easy mistake to make.

Remember the prices quoted are ex-VAT, so you need to at another 15% on for EU VAT.

  • Sorry guys have to disagree.
I downloaded the software and tried out the phone system, I was on a call for five minutes and was not disconnected.
I remember when I signed up for voipcheep that the call would only last for some 30 seconds and disconnect.
It could be that it recognises that I have a credit with voipcheep.

German VAT just went up from 16% to 19%, but I don't think that's on their websites yet

Read the terms and conditions - they are exactly the same. Once the trial is used up, you'll be expected to subscribe to continue use.

It's been advertised in the Voipcheap client for four months or so

This site lists all the Betamax companies' tariffs.

It doesn't seem to be mentioned on this thread that all of the Betamax clones for some time now have had a callback system enabling calls between ordinary phones, from just a 5c connection fee (ok, not free but close enough!)

To use this remote from a PC, Voipbuster has a Java client for mobile phones; it depends on Java version though - CLDC1.1 MIDP 2.0 [don't ask me!], and let's hope the other clones introduce it soon, as VB is 1c/min for UK landlines
  • The calls are not FREE because you have to purchase credit to be able to get them.

I signed up to Freecall last week and so far have called New Zealand, Australia and U.K landlines for up to 14 mins at a time with a total call time of 36 mins thus far. I havent put any credit on, so not sure how long this will last but......

I have just noticed my skype calls have gone up in cost, this seems to be due to a new connection charge that started sometime in January.

The connection charge is roughly the equivalent of 3 minutes call time.

I wasn't notified of this, was anyone else?

I don't think anyone was informed, specifically, about the new connection charge. It's one of those things we're supposed to find out by regularly checking the Skype web pages or by making a call!
