Overdraft insurance confustion

I was made redundant in December and noticed on my bank ststement that I have been paying £4.40 per month for overdraft payment protection insurance( which I don't recall taking out). I queried this withthe bank and they stated I had been paying it since 2005.
When I made my claim for unemployment however they stated that I was only covered for £550 and not the £2700 overdraft amount- apparently as ' I agreed the insurance premium'!
Any advice on whether to reclaim the PPI or to insist that it's the full overdraft which should be covered. Also- how do I go about doing it please?
Many thanks.
