Special, memorable things to do in York?

Years ago, I took my little girls to York, we had afternoon tea in a tearoom in an old building in the centre of the city.. From memory, it was downstairs quite dark and very atmospheric and lit just by candles. The waitresses were dressed as old fashioned serving girls.
Unfortunately, I can't remember the name and don't know if it would even still be there, perhaps someone who lives there will know. Anyway, my girls remember it to this day!0 -

i have just returned from york. The Railway Museum is a must. Lots of people were queing outside the Yorvik Museum, i went in years ago, but it still seems to be pulling the crowds. But you have to do one of the ghost walks, we did one, it was fantastic.
Hope you have a great time.0 -
Keep an eye out for the special offer vouchers for atttractions. Last year we found vouchers that saved us a fortune on the Jorvik centre, city museum and the boat trips on the river.
The art gallery is free as is a walk around the racecourse when it doesn't have race days on.
Worth also looking out for are Weatherspoon vouchers as there are two in York. They can make eating out at night an inexpensive option for you. Alternatively use any Tesco clubcard deals to purchase eating out vouchers for places like Bella Italia.
The bendy buses were a great way of travelling about York cheaply by purchasing a day ticket, especially if your mums legs are not up to lots of walking.
From a previous thread on MSE someone recommended a tea and cake place at the end of the Shambles area. It was an old church that has a bit of a boot sale outside each day. Cheapest place for a cuppa and very welcoming.
The Visit York website is handy - just select an activity type and then click on 'free' to see all of the free attractions.
Have a great time - we loved our budget stay.0 -
I live in York and think that I would go to the NRM or Castle Museum, but definately NOT Yorvik, it's the biggest rip off ever - it kills me not to warn people queuing that it's terrible!! The open-top buses are great as is a walk round the walls (about 3 miles?) and the view from the top of the minster is lovely.
I would go to Cafe Concerto near the minster above Betty's as it's very slightly cheaper and nicer, although I do realise that Betty's is a bit of an institution so you may want to go anyway.
There's also a fab homemade bread shop on the Shambles if you want to have a picnic (either in the Museum Gardens or the Minster Gardens).

I'm from York and would suggest going down the Shambles and stopping in the variety of chocolate shops there. Walking through the museum gardens and down by the river is lovely, you can get onto the bar walls from there too and do a round route, doesnt take very long but worth doing.
The castle musuem is often overlooked but actually really nice, with some good, if not updated very often, exhibits. Its also not that expensive to go to.
Whilst you wont be able to go insde, seeing the Mansion house from the outside is nice, just off Coney Street and round the corner from Betty's.
If youre looking for somewhere for dinner or lunch also, I'd recommend J Bakers Bistro on Fossgate. Fantastic and different food from the chef who held a michelin star in Leeds for ten years.
Enjoy your trip.0 -

Oooh, yeah, I love that shop (If I'm thinking of the same one!) Make sure you get there early as it sells out of the nicest stuff pretty quickly, especially on a Saturday!Overcome the notion that you must be ordinary. It robs you of the chance to be extraordinary!Goal Weight 140lb Starting Weight: 160lb Current Weight 145lb0
