Getting rid of timeshares

In the 80's my parents bought two timeshare weeks over Xmas and New Year at a beachfront resort for up to 6 people, however for the last 5 years or so, it's been a struggle to use up these holidays by the family, and now they've finally, finally agreed that perhaps they ought to think of getting rid of it.

Apparently they signed a contract to pay for it in perpetuity. There's no expectation to actually recoup any money, just to stop having to pay thousands of pounds for it well into their dotage. And I admit that I really don't want to inherit the obligation myself!

I had suggested that they simply hand the deeds back to the company, but a bit of research suggests that this isn't possible.

Are there any legal ways to get rid of it, without getting scammed?

  • We too want to sell our time share after 9 yrs. We bought from Devere and have had good times (no funny buisness with Devere) but we want to move on. Having looked at some of the site and now seeing probs that some people are having I feel as though I don't won't this hassle.

Does anyone know of a reputable company we can approach to sell our 'REPUTABLE' timeshare?
  • We too want to offload a timeshare we do not use and rid ourselves of the ever increasing maintenance charges. We would be happy to give it away for free. Does anyone have any ideas as to how we can do this legally?

You can sell them on Ebay & say the highest bidder will pay all the costs to transfer the deeds.

Of course if you really want to just offload put them on for a silly starting price but the highest bidder will still pay all the costs to transfer the deeds.

Have a look on Ebay there are quite a few just wanting to offload like you & there are people buying.

Did you own the weeks anywhere or did you have the points system?
    There is a difference?

My brother-in-law just stopped paying his fees too. He had 2 weeks at Christmas and New Year in Tenerife. Flights cost a fortune then, plus it was £500 maintenance for each week they had it, so £1000 each year, not including flights out there.

Not sure about how he did it though. Sorry.
